Deep Thoughts from an Unlikely Place
As a golfer, you won’t be surprised to know that I’m Alright (Theme from Caddyshack) by Kenny Loggins is one of my favorite songs.
Two things might surprise you.
First, I have listened to this song hundreds of times. Song on. Instant good mood.
Then one day I decided to actually read the words rather than mindlessly blabbering fake vocals when no one was in the car.
You might be surprised by what the song is urging us to do.
The hero of the song wonders why people just won’t let them be. If our lives are nobody’s business, why is it everyone else’s game?
Kenny then asks us who we are going to be today, and who are we listening to as we make up our mind? He challenges us to listen to our own heart beating for that answer.
Then the whole game changes. Kenny listens to his own heart, finds something from within, and declares, “Man, it makes me feel good.”
The rest of the song is the celebration of the resolution. The guitars, drums and keyboards take us to the beginning of that new journey and the end of the song.
Three questions using the vocabulary of the song:
Whose game are we interfering with, and should it be our business?
What is our own beating heart telling us about who we should be, and what would make us feel good?
If we listened to our own heartbeat, what destination would it take us to?
We are the stories we tell ourselves. Are you listening to your own story, or somebody else’s?
I hope the message of this song helps you become your own Cinderella Kid.
